Located in the heart of downtown Rio de Janeiro, right on Praça Tiradentes, is CRAB – the Sebrae Reference Center for Brazilian Handicrafts. Through November 31, 2018, the Pop-Up Gallery is showcasing 250 pieces by 40 master Brazilian artisans. Many of these items were previously featured on the TV Globo soap opera "A Lei do Amor."
The collection includes works by renowned artists such as Expedito Seleiro, João das Alagoas, Dona Irineia, and Tiago Amorim, alongside a new generation of artisans who stand out for their highly expressive and original craftsmanship.
Beyond showcasing the fruits of each artisan's skill and dedication, the pieces are also for sale. Buyers commit to keeping the works on display. Eliana Marinho, Sebrae's creative economy coordinator, explains:
"These pieces have a history because they come from master artisans, and they have a journey because they represent the entire country. After they returned to CRAB, we began restoring some of the items and decided to hold a gallery-style sale. We established a pact with the buyers to ensure the pieces remain on display," says Eliana Marinho, Sebrae's creative economy coordinator, to the newspaper O Globo.
It is well worth a visit to see the beauty of Brazilian artisanal tradition firsthand and witness the wonders that human hands can create. It is also worth heading to the second floor of CRAB to explore the library dedicated to the world of handmade goods, and visiting the terrace, which offers a great view of Praça Tiradentes.
