This initiative aims to promote access to sanitary pads, a basic necessity that remains out of reach for millions of menstruating individuals living in vulnerable conditions.
The program provides a sustainable alternative while also generating income for seamstresses who lost their jobs and livelihoods during the pandemic and are facing financial hardship in the "new normal."
In its first phase, the Mulheres+Renda program is partnering with BRK, a sanitation company. This joint effort will distribute reusable sanitary pads to students in public schools in the cities of Paço Lumiar and São José de Ribamar, both in Maranhão, with the support of local municipal governments. This initiative aims to provide support to students, helping to reduce school dropout rates. Research indicates that 62% of adolescent girls have missed school during their menstrual period, totaling about 45 days of absence per year. This is because one in four students cannot afford to buy sanitary pads.
With funding from BRK, 60 seamstresses were selected, each earning R$ 1,960.00, resulting in the production of 33,600 sanitary pads for 8,400 young women and girls. They will receive kits containing four pads and a guide on how to wash them so they can be reused for up to 3 years.
