Repurposing packaging as a solution to single-use plastics

September 14, 2026

Since last year, the UN Environment Programme has been warning about the impact of our plastic consumption on the oceans. Images of marine animals deformed or killed because plastic packaging ended up in the seas are circulating in news reports, social media posts, billboards, and other materials aimed at raising awareness.

The NGO Parley for the Oceans is dedicated to cleaning up the oceans and finding strategies to reduce our consumption of single-use plastics, such as packaging. We have reached a point where recycling alone is not enough; we need alternatives, we need to change the materials we use. That is why Corona beer in Australia partnered with the organization to find a substitute for the plastic rings on six-packs of beer. Together, the two companies created a biodegradable substitute made from paper.
